Microsoft Office Troubleshooting

Jul 28, 2011

Microsoft Office is the most widely used suite of productivity applications. Although Office software packages vary, at the very least Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint will be included. You can try some basic troubleshooting for each of these software programs if they fail to operate correctly. For more detailed information about your specific issue, you can use the Microsoft Help & Support website.

Installation Errors

If you encounter an install error with MS Office, you should check your computer for older versions of the program. Remove these files from "Add/Remove Programs" on your computer and then attempt to reinstall the software. To reinstall, place the original software disc in your CD/DVD drive. Follow the instructions given by the on-screen wizard before restarting your computer.

Microsoft Office may also fail to install correctly if you are unable to enter the correct Product Key. Find the Product Key listed on the disc sleeve and packaging of the software program. If you misplace the Product Key or if it fails to work, you will need to contact MS Support.

Startup Problems

In order to troubleshoot start-up issues for Microsoft Office, you should install the Support Template within the program. Select the "Change/Remove Programs" option under "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel. Select your version of Office from the populated list and select "Add/Remove Features." From "Custom Setup," you will proceed to choose "Wizards and Templates." After finding the icon for "More Templates and Macros," select "Run All." Once the Support Template has been installed, you can open it by clicking on the icon. The utility can help get the particular Office program started by pinpointing the issue using specialty diagnostic tools.

Office Diagnostics

Many of the versions of Microsoft Office, including 2007 and higher, have the Microsoft Office Diagnostic Tool. Under the "Help" menu, click on "Office Diagnostic" and then proceed to the "Start Diagnostics" option. If this tool locates a problem, it will attempt to fix the issue automatically. If it fails, it will provide instructions on how to potentially resolve the issue. In some versions of MS Office, you may find this tool under "Program Options." You will then need to continue by selecting "Resources" and "Diagnose."
